Best red wine growing region in Romania is DOC Dealu Mare. The wine growing area Munetien is located in the Subcarpathian region. The best Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wines from the country come from here. As well as the best red wines from the local variety Feteasca Neagra.

… unique climate

Dealu Mare is a 60 km long stretch of land with a unique micro climate (temperate-continental). The soil is dominated by loess, loam and lime with a high iron content. The wine towns of Boldesti, Valea Calugareasca, Urlati, Ceptura and Tohani are towards to the south. Facing the impressing snow-capped Carpathian peaks. Which protect the wine-region from the cold north winds.

The story of the winery begins when the Corsican earl “Guy Tyrel de Poix” became fascinated by a recommendation from Hugh Johnson in his famous book “The Story of Wine”. Johnson had briefly mentioned Romania as a country with high potential in viticulture and wine production. During his first visit to Romania in 1993, “Earl Guy de Poix” was intrigued and captivated by the potential of the Dealu Mare DOC. Especially by the quality of the wines from the local variety – Fetească Neagră.

S.E.R.V.E. made up his brand in the Romanian wine industry pretty fast. Achieving the first dry rosé wine and the first Cuvée Charlotte, made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Fetească Neagră.

In 2014, SERVE released its opus magnum. Cuvée Guy de Poix 2011, in homage to the owner “Earl Guy de Poix” who died in the year of this special and celebrated vintage. Untill his death the believed in the potential of the Fetească Neagră grape.

My degustation notes:

Redwine Cuvée Charlotte 2013 | S.E.R.V.E – Dealu Mare Romania

For me, this red wine Cuvée Charlotte from SERVE is an extraordinarily elegant wine. With its feminine structure and silky berry fruit notes, the cuvée impresses with its balance and sweetness / acidity ratio.

The awarded and award-winning Cuvée Charlotte consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Feteasca Negra and Merlot. A “Bordeaux and Dealu Mare” mix, so to say.

The first sip immediately made me thought of “Virginie” from Bordeaux. In fact, to the right bank. Please don´t understand me wrong. I am talking about “VIRGINIE DE VALANDRAUD” and the same named Grand Cru wine from Saint Emillion.

An almost endless long finale on the palate penetrates the whole body, and leads to an almost meditative well-being that reminds me of yoga and meditation music. Ruby red with blue / violet reflections in the glass, which range from turquoise green with a light violet and subtle pink facets, are other colors that not only describe the wine optically.

Of course you drink this wine in a Bordeaux glass. This wine will impress you!

The wine country Romania is super exciting and makes you to want more. Just because it is very original and authentic. There are many great wines to discover. The infrastructure in the country is “expandable”. There is a lot to see and experience culturally. From a bathing beach holiday at the Black Sea to skiing in the Transilvanian Mountains. Romania offers you an almost undiscovered and diverse spectrum of culture and leisure activities.

In terms of quality, the country with its wine production is an equal standard with all the wine countries from Eastern Europe that I have visit so far. If you expand your portfolio with wine from Romania. Then a door will open up for you in a previously unknown wine world.
