Cave Du Chateau De Chenas

The last stop of my Burgundy trip takes me to the cooperative “Cave du Chateau de Chenas” in Beaujolais region. The cooperative exist since 1934 and is about 250 hectares in size, with an every year harvest from about 10.000 hectoliters of wine and more than 1.2 million bottles of grape juice.

Die “letzte” Station meiner Burgund-Reise führt mich zu der Winzergenossenschaft “Cave Du Chateau De Chenas” in die Region Beaujolais. Die Genossenschaft besteht seit 1934 und ist ca. 250 ha. groß, mit einem Jahresertrag von 10.000 hl. Wein und mehr als 1.2 millionen Flaschen Rebensaft.

Please note that. You do not make friends in Burgundy and Beaujolais, if you count Beaujolais to Burgundy, and consider them as one unified region. None of your arguments is accepted. Among the population, there seems to be an undescribed demarcation whose origin I unfortunately could not explore. Neither maps that prove that togetherness, my sommelier training in which this was taught, nor the same grape varieties use for wines such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Gamay is not recognized as an argument. Beaujolais is Beaujolais and Burgundy is Burgundy.

Bitte merken. Sie machen sich sowohl im Burgund als auch im Beaujolais keine Freunde, wenn Sie das Beaujolais zu Burgund zählen, und als eine einheitliche Region zusammenfassend betrachten. Keiner Ihrer Argumente wird akzeptiert.Unter der Bevölkerung scheint es da eine unbeschriebene Abgrenzung zu geben, deren Ursprung ich leider nicht erkunden konnte. Weder diverse Landkarten die jene Zusammengehörigkeit belegen, meine Sommelier Ausbildung in der dies gelehrt wurde, und auch nicht die gleiche Rebsorten Verwendung für Weine wie Chardonnay, Pinot Noir und Gamay wird nicht als Argument anerkannt. So, the wine-growing region south of Burgundy called as Beaujolais is scenically distinct from the north. Here you will find real scenic elevations and mountains, which allow a beautiful view of the country. I perceived the Beaujolais region as the more exciting region compared to the lowlands and the “only” scattered hills further north. The climate in Beaujolais is divided into three climatic zones (continental, oceanic, mediterranean). The Mistral, a cold, often strong wind, coming from the northwest, meets you here and accompanies you to the southern Rhone. The soil structure is very versatile with 320 Million-year-old granite, porphyry, slate, lime, sand and clay. Wine from the Beaujolais is 98% red wine with the main grape Gamay. The region is about 23.000 hectares and is divided into 12 appellations. Brouilly, Chénas, Cote de Brouilly, Chiroubles, Fleury, Juliénas, Morgon, Moulin á vent, Régnié, Saint-Amour, Beaujolais-Villages, Beaujolais.

The top wines, the Crus de Beaujolais, are located in the Beaujolais-Village area. The Beaujoulais Village wines are those sophisticated level and character wines from the hill country and mountain region that enjoy a Gobelet grape variety education. The storable wines are preferred in Chenas, Moulin au Vent and Morgon. The Saint Amour, Fleurie and Chiroubles wines are rather delicate and supple in their structure. Whereas the robust wines tend to be grown in Broully, Cote de Brouilly, Regnie and Julienas. The wines labeled “Beaujolais” are rather those “simple” wines from varietals of the entire Beaujolais region, which grow mainly in Guyot grape varieties

Also, das Weinanbaugebiet südlich von Burgund namens Beaujolais ist landschaftlich deutlich vom Norden zu unterscheiden. Hier findet man schon richtige landschaftliche Erhebungen und Berge, die einen schönen Ausblick auf das Land ermöglichen. Ich empfand die Beaujolais Region als die spannendere Region im Vergleich zum Flachland und den “nur” vereinzelten Hügellandschaften weiter im Norden. Das Klima im Beaujolais ist in drei Klima-Zonen (Kontinental, Ozeanisch, Mediterrane) unterteilt. Der Mistral, ein kalter, oft starker Fallwind, aus nordwestlicher Richtung kommend, begegnet Ihnen bereits hier und begleitet Sie bis in die südliche Rhone. Die Bodenstruktur ist sehr vielseitig mit Granit, Porphyr, Schiefer, Kalk, Sand und Lehm. Wein aus dem Beaujolais ist zu 98% Rotwein mit der Hauptrebsorte Gamay. Die Region ist ca. 23.000 Hektar groß und ist in 12 Appellationen unterteilt. Brouilly, Chénas, Cote de Brouilly, Chiroubles, Fleurie, Juliénas, Morgon, Moulin á vent, Régnié, Saint-Amour, Beaujolais-Villages, Beaujolais.

Die Spitzenweine die “Crus de Beaujolais” befinden sich im Gebiet Beaujolais-Village. Die Beaujoulais Village Weine sind jene Anspruchvollen Niveau und Charakter-Weine aus der Hügellandschaft und Berg Region, die eine Gobelet Rebsortenerziehung genießen. Die lagerfähigen Weine finden Sie bevorzugt in Chenas, Moulin au Vent und Morgon. Die Saint Amour, Fleurie und Chiroubles Weine sind in Ihrer Struktur eher zart und geschmeidig. Wohingegen die robusten Weine eher in Broully, Cote de Brouilly, Regnie und Julienas angebaut werden. Die unter “Beaujolais” etikettierten Weine, sind eher jene “einfachen” Weine aus Rebsorten der gesamten Region Beaujolais stammen, und überwiegend im Guyot Rebsorten Erziehung wachsen.

 

Cave du Château de Chénas

The history of Chénas Castle, considered the jewel of the region, goes back to the early Middle Ages. The castle of Chénas was elaborately restored in 1821 by Adrien DELAHANTE. Since 1934, the Cave du Château de Chénas wines are matured in French oak barrels and aged in the vaulted cellar of the castle from the 17th century. It follows the philosophy of Greater Burgundy: “Perfect balance is the harmony and respect of the region”.

Die Geschichte des Schlosses von Chénas, das als Juwel der Region galt, geht bis auf das frühe Mittelalter zurück. Das Schloss von Chénas wurde 1821 von Adrien DELAHANTE aufwändig restauriert. Seit 1934 werden die Cave du Château de Chénas Weine in französischen Barriques ausgebaut und reifen im Gewölbekeller des Schlosses aus dem 17. Jahrhundert. Es wird die Philosophie des Großen Burgunds verfolgt: “Perfekte Balance ist die Harmonie und der Respekt der Region”.

Like many other hard-working oenologists around the world, he is one of those unknown people who do excellent work that is far too little appreciated.

Wie weltweit viele hart arbeitende Oenologen gehört auch er zu jenen unbekannten Menschen, die exzellente Arbeit leisten die wohl viel zu wenig geschätz wird.

 

It is impossible to tell the story of the Cave de Chenas without introducing “Didier Rageot”. The cellar master and chief enologist has been working in the cooperative since 1998 and dedicates his full passion to the Beaujolais wine. Didier origin is from a traditional french family of winemakers and sees his job more as a mission. He has accumulated wine-growing experience throughout France and can now focus on the excellence of Beaujolais Crus grape quality. His goal is to create handmade and authentic wines.

Es ist unmöglich die Geschichte der Cave de Chenas zu erzählen ohne dabei “Didier Rageot” vorzustellen. Der Kellermeister und Chefoenologe ist seit 1998 in der Genossenschaft beschäftigt und widme seine volle Leidenschaft den Beaujolais Wein. Didier Stammt aus einer traditionellen Winzerfamilie und versteht seinen Beruf mehr als Berufung. Erfahrungen zur Weinbreitung hat er in ganz Frankreich gesammelt und kann sich nun auf die Exzellenz der Beaujolais Crus Traubenqualität konzentrieren. Sein Ziel ist es handgemachte und authentische Weine kreieren.

Beaujolais “Primeur” or Beaujolais “Noveau”

In recent history in Beaujolais, a young wine called “Primeur” or “Noveau” has been marketed in Germany as a rather successful young wine, which in retrospect unfortunately did not favor the reputation of the region. This was less due to the quality of the wines, more to the image that this wonderful region is thus incorrectly attached. In addition to that marketing wine of the past which also had a lot of good, among other things for the German-French friendship building of the post-war period, there are very good, high quality and storable wines here.

 

Beaujolais “Primeur” oder Beaujolais “Noveau”

In der jüngeren Geschichte hat man im Beaujolais durch einen jungen Wein mit dem Namen “Primeur” oder “Noveau” einen in Deutschland sehr erfolgreichen eher günstigen Jungwein vermarktet, der leider im Nachhinein dem Ansehen der Region langfristig nicht wohlwollend war. Das lag weniger an der Qualität der Weine, mehr am Image das diese wunderbare Region damit falscher Weise angeheftet wird. Neben jenem Marketing Wein der Vergangenheit der auch viel gutes hatte, unter Anderem für den deutsch französichen Freundschaftsaufbau der Nachkriegszeit, gibt es hier sehr wohl sehr gute, qualitative hochwertige und lagerfähige Weine.

The Beaujolais is a much to underestimated and very exciting wine region, a short visit is not enough. Currently, you can find many trend wines, such as natural wine and organic wines in production, especially among young winemakers. But I’ll tell you more about it on my next visit.

Das Beaujolais ist eine viel zu unterschätzte und sehr spannende Weinregion für die ein Kurzbesuch nicht ausreicht. Aktuell findet man gerade bei jungen Winzern viele Trendweine wie Naturwein und Organicweine in Produktion. Aber dazu erzähle ich dann gerne bei meinem nächsten Besuch mehr.
