Metropolitan area of Lyon

Lyon is about 160 km west of Geneva and about 300 km north of Marseille. With approximately 500 000 inhabitants in the center and approximately 2 200 000 inhabitants throughout the metropolitan area, Lyon is the third largest city in France after Paris and Marseille. The city is located at the northern point in the department of Rhone. For tourists from Germany, Lyon is a largely undiscovered and seemingly underrated city. Also, I had never been to Lyon before and apart from the recently deceased celebrity chef cook “Paul Bocuse” I was also missing any association with the capital of the Auvergne Rhone Alpes region.

Metropolregion Lyon

Lyon liegt ca. 160 km westlich von Genf und ca. 300 km nördlich von Marseille. Mit ca. 500 000 Einwohnern im Zentrum und ca. 2 200 000 Einwohnern in der gesamten Metropolregion ist Lyon nach Paris und Marseille die drittgrößte Stadt in Frankreich. Die Stadt liegt am nördlichsten Punkt im Departement Rhone. Für Touristen aus Deutschland ist Lyon eine weitgehend unentdeckte und scheinbar unterschätzte Stadt. Auch ich war zuvor nie in Lyon gewesen und außer zum kürzlich verstorbenen Starkoch „Paul Bocuse“ fehlte mir auch jede Assoziation zur Hauptstadt der Region Auvergne Rhone Alpes.

Wine Trophy – Concours de Lyon

In the spring time 2018 and 2019 I accepted the invitation of the Concours de Lyon, to participate as a wine juror at the Lyon Wine Trophy, to taste the current vintage of French wines and possibly award a gold medal. So I had already twice the opportunity on a long weekend to get to know and love Lyon.

Ich folgte im Frühjahr 2018 und 2019 der Einladung vom Verband Concours de Lyon, um als Weinjuror bei der Wein-Trophy Lyon teilzunehmen, um die aktuellen Jahrgänge Französischer-Weine zu verkosten und ggf. mit einer Gold-Medaille zu prämieren. So hatte ich bereits zwei mal an einem verlängerten Wochenende die Gelegenheit Lyon kennen und lieben zu lernen.

Lyon’s traditional gastronomy enjoys a worldwide reputation for excellence thanks to Paul Bocuse. But more on that later. The proximity to the Alps and the navigable access to the Mediterranean, the nearby wine-growing region of Jura, Beaujolais and Cotes du Rhone leave all possibilities open for gastronomic superlatives. Furthermore, Lyon is known as the “City of Light”, which hosts the “Fete des Lumieres” on 8 December each year.

Die Lyoner traditionelle Gastronomie genießt dank Paul Bocuse einen weltweit hoch angesehenen Ruf. Aber dazu später mehr. Die Alpen-Nähe und der schiffbare Zugang zum Mittelmeer, das nahegelegene Weinanbaugebiet Jura, Beaujolais und Cotes du Rhone lassen alle Möglichkeiten offen zur Gastronomischen Superlative. Weiter ist Lyon als „Stadt des Lichtes“ bekannt, zu dem es jährlich am 8. Dezember die „Fete des Lumieres“ stattfindet.

The City Lyon shows me very modern with traditional consciousness. The city is clean, tidy, multicultural and very safe. Whether this is a merit of the international police department Interpol, which has its headquarters here, or the IARC International Cancer Research Center, I leave open? However, what makes the city unique and exciting is the confluence of the rivers Rhone and the Saone. So you have a historic old town to the river course of the Saone in the north by many street musicians and artists present, a city center with exciting bars and restaurants between the rivers, and a modern metropolis-south city which is created on the Rhone.

Die Stadt Lyon zeigt sich mir sehr modern mit traditionellem Bewusstsein. Die Stadt ist sauber, aufgeräumt, multikulturell und sehr sicher. Ob dies ein Verdienst der internationalen Polizeibehörde Interpol ist, die hier Ihren Hauptsitz hat, oder der IARC Internationales Krebsforschungszentrum, lasse ich mal offenstehen?! Was die Stadt jedoch einzigartig und spannend gestaltet ist der Zusammenfluss der Flüsse Rhone und der Saone. So hat man eine historische Altstadt zum Flussverlauf der Saone im Norden indem sich viele Straßenmusiker und Künstler präsentieren, eine Mittelstadt mit spannenden Bars und Restaurant zwischen den Flüssen, und eine moderne Metropole-Südstadt die an die Rhone angelegt ist.

Parc de la Tête d’or

Lyon is fash and innovative and has a beautiful park called “Tete d’or” that seduces to relax and walk, to escape the stresses of everyday life, it does not require much effort. The public transport network is very well developed, so you always get by bus, train and tram safely to its destination. There is a tram that goes directly from the airport to the city center every 30 minutes, taking you safely, reliably and on time from the city center to the airport for a few euros (about 15 Euro).

Lyon ist aufstrebend, innovativ und hat einen wunderschönen Park „Tete d´or“ der zum Entspannen und Spazierengehen verführt, um dem Stressigen-Alltag zu entfliehen, bedarf es keinen großen Aufwand. Das öffentliche Verkehrsnetz ist super ausgebaut, so kommt man ständig mit Bus, Bahn und Tram sicher an sein Ziel. Es gibt eine Tram die alle 30 Minuten direkt vom Airport in das Stadtzentrum führt und Sie sicher, zuverlässig und pünktlich vom Stadt-Zentrum für wenige Euro (ca. 15 Euro) zum Flughafen bringt.

La Confluence is the most up-coming district of Lyon and is located in the 2nd arrondissement, right at the confluence of the rivers Rhone and Saône. The area between the rivers Rhone and Saône covers 150 hectares, it was created between 1770 and 1850 by land reclamation. In the past, industry, trade and transport facilities, warehousing storage and freight transhipment points and established here. At present, this area is the most expensive residential area in Lyon where the square meter prices are around 20,000, – Euro. The whole residential area with shopping center and many leisure activities is the current hot spot and The Place to be!

La Confluence ist der zur Zeit aufstrebenste Stadtteil von Lyon und befindet sich im 2. Arrondissement direkt am Zusammenfluss von den Flüssen Rhone und Saône. Das Gelände zwischen den Flüssen Rhone und Saône umfasst 150 Hektar, es entstand zwischen 1770 und 1850 durch Landgewinnung. Hier wurden früher Industrie,- Handels- und Transportanlagen, Lagerspeicher und Umschlagplätze für Güter angesiedelt. Zur Zeit ist dieses Gebiet das teuerste Wohngebiet in Lyon bei dem die Quadratmeterpreise bei ca. 20.000,- Euro liegen. Das ganze Wohngebiet mit Einkaufszentrum und vielen Freizeit Aktivitäten ist der aktuelle Hotspot and The Place to be!

The Musée des Confluences is a museum in Lyon that aims to convey “global knowledge with a focus on natural sciences.” The new building opened on 21 December 2014. Its name derives from the location, at the confluence of the rivers Rhone and Saône, close to the motorway of Lyon, the Autoroute A7. It is accessed via the same-named stop of line 1 of the Lyon tram.

Das Musée des Confluences ist ein Museum in Lyon, das “globales Wissen mit Schwerpunkt Naturwissenschaften vermitteln will. Der Neubau wurde am 21. Dezember 2014 eröffnet. Sein Name leitet sich von der Lage ab, nämlich am Zusammenfluss der Flüsse Rhone und Saône, dicht an der Lyoner Stadtautobahn, der Autoroute A7. Es ist über die gleichnamige Haltestelle der Linie 1 der Straßenbahn Lyon erschlossen.

Confluence Museum soll die neuesten Entwicklungen im Bereich Wissenschaft darstellen und möchte mit seinen Kollektionen die Entwicklung, Träume und Grundfragen der menschlichen Gesellschaften in Zeit und Raum beschreiben und verständlich machen. Es widmet sich besonders der Anthropologie und der Ethnologie.

The building was designed by the Viennese architect group Coop Himmelb (l) au, which prevailed in an architectural competition in February 2001 against strong competition, among others Steven Holl. The planning and construction period was 14 years and took a decade longer than planned.

Das Gebäude wurde von der Wiener Architektengruppe Coop Himmelb(l)au entworfen, die sich in einem Architektenwettbewerb im Februar 2001 gegen starke Konkurrenz, unter anderem Steven Holl, durchgesetzt hatte.
