Piran at Istrian Slovenia

… is a city in the extreme southwest of Slovenia on the Adriatic coast. With its location, its old town and Venetian architecture, the town on the Slovenian Riviera is one of the most beautiful places in Slovenia and Europe.

At the western point of the headland is the burg-like church of Sv. Klementa (St. Clementa), which is considered the landmark of the city.

The name of the city “Piran” comes from the Greek word “pyros” and means fire. According to legend, on the promontory of Punta, a lighthouse fire, the ships have the way to the Greek colony Aegida (Koper) have pointed. Piranum is first mentioned in writing in the 7th century.

The municipality of Piran has about 17,000 inhabitants on 45 km ² area. The city itself has 4,100 inhabitants.

Piran borders Croatia to the south and Koper and Izola to the east. It also has a maritime border with Italian territorial waters in the north. The highest point is the 289 m high Baretovec pri Padni.

Piran grenzt im Süden an Kroatien und im Osten an die Gemeinden Koper und Izola. Außerdem besitzt sie im Norden eine Seegrenze mit italienischen Hoheitsgewässern. Die höchste Erhebung ist der 289 m hohe Baretovec pri Padni.

The city Bay of Piran is important as a shipping route for the Slovenian port of Koper.

Die Stadt benannte Bucht von Piran ist als Schifffahrtsweg für den slowenischen Hafen Koper von Bedeutung.
