Cote-d´Or a journey through time…

This article is the start of a series about my trip to the Burgundy wine region in eastern France. “Cote-d´Or” is perhaps the center for the most expensive wines in the world. What I experienced during my trip you can read here, … so let’s go!

Zeitreise Cote-d´Or…

Cote d´Or” as spiritual ghost

The department of “Cote-d´Or” begins at the south of the capital of Burgundy the City “Dijon”. The “Cote de Nuits” area is located at the 47 latitude. Immediately following further south the area is called “Cote de Beaune”. Both regions are connected by the river Saone, that makes them so valuable. The river is so important for soil irrigation and for the regions agriculture and winegrowing. That´s why they choose gold as a symbol for the area. It originated “Cote de Nuits” and “Cote de Beaune” as “Cote-d´Or”. The influence of the river, the continental climate, and the Alps not far further to the east near to Mont Blanc. This combination forms the golden hill for the “Cote d´Or” as spiritual ghost. The Saone river supplies the soil (limestone, weathered marl) and their vines with the important minerals and trace elements for the main autochthone grape varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which have their origin here.

The sun heralds springtime

A strong ungrateful north-easterly wind blows. There is a harsh climate on this winter day in early march. Barren landscapes. All flatland, no mountains far and wide in sight. In distance I see some hills, perfect orientation to the south / south-east. The sun is shining strongly and defy the climate. The temperature is low by about 9 degree and heralds springtime.

The Middle Age are very close

Looking out of the window at the meticulously tidy vineyards, during driving my rented car, I see many castles, chateaus, mansions, that seem to have seen no facade color since the Middle Ages. Here has nothing changed since many centuries. A journey through time and the perfect filmsetting for a featured film of the Renaissance cultural epoch. The time of the transition from the middle ages to modern times around the 15th and 16th centuries, I guess ?!

Cote d´Or smells sublime, classy and exclusive. Hidden behind various walls, modernity shines. The crossover between history and modernity makes the appeal here. At least for those who like that. To live here is very special and certainly only suitable for certain and special characters with a fat purse.

Here, in fact, the church tower is the highest elevation in the city, since many centuries. The landscape becomes more exciting further south towards Beaujolais. You can read more about this in the next posts … soon!
